Eagles Named to Face Canada
National Teams - USA Men

USA Men’s National 15s Team Head Coach Mike Tolkin has named his squad to face Canada Saturday in Edmonton, Alb.

Troy Hall and Adam Siddall will get their first-ever caps in this match, with Hall starting at outside center and Siddall starting at fullback. In addition, reserves Tom Coolican, Nick Wallace, Liam Murphy, Chris Saint, and Seamus Kelly could earn their first caps in this match.

Originally dubbed a non-cap international by the International Rugby Board, this game was upgraded to a full-on test match by the IRB this week.

Todd Clever captains the side and will play No. 8, partnering with Peter Dahl at openside and John Quill at blindside. Both flankers showed themselves well during the fall tours. The front row is Shawn Pittman at loosehead, and Eric Fry at tighthead, with Zach Fenoglio getting his first USA start and second cap at hooker. Chris Biller is out due to injury.

Brian Doyle and Lou Stanfill return as what has become the USA’s top-choice second row combination.

Robbie Shaw and Toby L’Estrange return as the halfbacks, while scrumhalf Mike Petri remains sidelined due to a broken thumb.

Andrew Suniula comes in at inside center for his 19th cap and partners with Hall, who has a long history playing for NYAC, but has many times just missed out on playing for the Eagles.

Luke Hume is back from 7s duty and sets up on the right wing, while James Paterson, unavailable for the November tour due to work, returns to the position he patrolled in the 2011 World Cup and in the spring of 2012.

Siddall, who emerged as a star flyhalf for Old Blue this season, slots in at fullback in favor of Blaine Scully due to the fact he has been playing more 15s (Scully has been with the USA 7s team), and because the team needs a goalkicker. Suniula and Paterson can both kick, but Siddall is deemed more reliable.

Phil Thiel returns to the USA after taking 2012 off to play rugby league. He will sub in as a prop. He joins four solid young US college products on the bench: Nick Wallace (St. Mary’s), Graham Harriman (UM-Duluth), Chris Saint (Penn State), Seamus Kelly (Cal), and Blaine Scully (Cal).

Also on the best is Boston flanker Liam og Murphy, who played for the USA at age-grade level, and Tom Coolican, who played for Australian Universities, but qualifies for the USA by parentage.

Starting Lineups for USA v Canada
National Teams - USA Men

The starting lineups for Saturday's Pacific Nations Cup opener at Ellerslie Park in Edmonton have been named. The game will be streamed live at 2pm MT online at rugbycanada.ca.

Todd Clever is earning his 26th cap as captain Saturday, putting him one behind the USA's most-capped captain, Dave Hodges (28).

This game is Mike Tolkin's second as head coach against Canada, and the first for starters Zach Fenoglio, John Quill, Peter Dahl, Toby L'Estrange, Troy Hall and Adam Siddall. Canada is starting seven players who've never suited up against the USA in 15s. Two, Taylor Paris and John Moonlight, have played 7s against the US on numerous occasions.

Each side is starting just one uncapped player, inside center Patrick Parfrey is Canada's, and fullback Adam Siddall is the USA's. Outside center Troy Hall and hooker Zach Fenoglio are capped but getting their first starts in Eagle jerseys, and on the other side of the ball, openside flanker John Moonlight is making his first start and earning his fourth cap.

Boys HS Single-School Rankings Presented by Selective Service May 23 2013
Rankings - Boys High School

Well you might say it wasn't a National Championship because it didn't include a play-in for every region, but the old USA Rugby National HS Championship didn't either. Many regions in America opted out of the final tournament simply because it didn't fit in with their schedule, or was too expensive.

Still, this past weekend's Boys HS National Invitational did provide plenty of fodder for our rankings. Almost all the top teams were there, and they got to play each other, as well.

We might see a few little changes over the course of the end of the spring, but this past weekend put us in the best position to settle the rankings. Here are some of our explanations:

selective service

Jesuit came into the NIT at #3, and beat #5, #2 and #1. Easy - they're top now.

Who goes to #2? Well #1 Gonzaga lost a close one to Jesuit, 21-16. But Herriman, who we had ranked #5, almost beat Jesuit. They lost 18-17 on a missed conversion. Then they plowed over Dixon and Charlotte Catholic. Add in the fact that Herriman earlier beat HS Club winners United twice, and we think they have to be #2, despite finishing 5th at the Invitational.

Virtually all men living in the U.S. must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Men who fail to register become ineligible for important opportunities such as student loans, job training programs, citizenship for male immigrants, and driver’s license renewal in most states. In addition, registration is required for employment with the federal government, numerous state and local agencies, and a growing number of private employers. Men who fail to register by age 26 can be PERMANENTLY barred from these opportunities. Learn more, check your status, or register today at www.sss.gov.

Herriman, in white, did enough to be #2. Tamara Tidey photo.

As a result of Herriman's move up, we move up Snow Canyon, who beat Herriman once and lost to them later. Unionville moves up thanks to state title in Pennsylvania, and St. Igantius moves up because we made a mistake last week, and charged St. Igantius of Ohio for a loss by St. Igantius of Illinois (it could happen to anyone).

In the Tier II at nationals, two teams recorded important results. Greenwich, thought by many, including us, as the best of the Tier II, lost the final to Brother Rice (a HS club). Meanwhile, Brownsburg, which had been dropped out of the rankings, came back in with wins over St. Thomas Aquinas and Maryland Exiles.

Torrey Pines and Wilson HS move up because the San Diego Mustangs, the HS Club fed by Torrey Pines, did so well in the HS Club Invitational.

We expand the list to 40 just to accommodate some undefeated teams that did well. Watch for some other state playoffs to make a few adjustments, but we are confident that the top eight or so are not going to move.
